Learning Games at Home

- fill a clear plastic bag with some sugar, it should lay flat
- show a letter to your student and have them write it in the sugar
other variations: Can you write the letter _? Write the letter that makes the _ sound?
Number writing, sight word practice, the options are endless!
- use flashcards or printed letters (maybe 10 or so that your student has some familiarity with but needs more practice on); place them or tape them around the house
- have them find the letter, identifying it and the letter sound when they find it
-- you can also use pictures of things and make this into a beginning sounds game; ex. picture of an apple is found, ask what sound apple starts with?

- write a letter that your student needs some extra help practicing
- have your student trace the letter using red and say its name out loud
- continue this practice with a variety of colors
Using uppercase and lowercase letters or one set of letters and one set of picture cards:
- choose about 5 sets of cards (5 cards and their corresponding letter/picture card) and spread them out
- have your student choose a card and find its match (ex. "A" --> "a" or "A" to a card with an apple on it)
Go outside and have your student use chalk for any kind of practice that might normally be done on paper!
- Can you write the letter/number __?
- Write the letter that makes the __ sound.
- Can you write uppercase and lowercase __?
For a big challenge try using this for practice with addition/subtraction later in the year!
